Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are a class of medications used to treat heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and stomach ulcers. PPIs include Nexium, Dexilant, Prevacid, Prilosec, Zegerid, Protonix, Aciphex and Vimovo. These medications inhibit the amount of acid in the stomach. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued a safety alert warning consumers about an increased risk of fractures of the hip, wrist and spine associated with the use of these medications. The FDA has revised warning labels for these medications to include information on the increased risk of bone fractures. The new information is based on the FDA's review of several epidemiological studies which supported an increased risk of fractures, particularly in patients taking high doses of the medications or those taking the medications for one year or more. The May 2010 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine cited a study of 145,000 people in England reflection a 44% increased risk of hip fracture in patients using the product for more than a year. Those patient who took high doses of the medication for over a year had twice the risk of fracture compared to those who did not take the drug. In the largest meta-analysis to date, the drugs were associated with a 25% increased risk of fracture according to a presentation by Ivo Ditah, MD, and reported at a recent American College of Gastroenterology meeting.
